What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.

Coach Sean Hatanaka
Sean (Yoshi) Hatanaka is a certified Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor and coach under the Jiu Jitsu For Life Association. Coach Sean holds a Brown Belt under 4th Degree Black Belt Professor Jorge Britto. Father of two, husband and the Deputy Fire Chief / volunteer firefighter for the Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Sean has had a lifelong love for martial art practices and has studied a variety of styles (Karate, Escrima, Western Boxing, Muay Thai, Japanese and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) however since 2011 has dedicated himself specifically to the gentle art of Jiu Jitsu.
What he’s learnt is that to be successful in his discipline he needed to take a holistic approach of mind, breath and movement. The practice of quieting the mind, controlling breathing and directing energy to efficient primal and natural movement not only lead to success in his art but in his overall life.
Now he is sharing his experiences with others to give them skills for a stronger, holistic approach to meditation, martial arts and movement.
